Starting Your Own Meetup
In person meetups are important and allow for like minded people to get together, they can feature a speaker or can be a simple get together. If a speaker is brought in it’s suggested you have someone who can come in from a different organization to explain what they do, how they impact the community and how a person can join so that they can hopefully get more volunteers or possibly funding.
You want to have a set task that’s preferably relevant to the subject the speaker is talking about or in preparation for something like a protest or rally, some meetups can focus on teaching a skill.
The tasks people can do can be things like; making bracelets, necklaces, felt pins, dream catchers, bookmarks, yo-yo dolls, sock monkeys, baskets from plastic bags and anything else you can think of. Skills that could be taught include things like learning braiding techniques, how to sew, woodworking, upscale recycling, tatting, knitting, crochet and even poetry.
Just be sure you have the supplies for what you want to do, see if there’s anyone who would be an expert in that field or learn enough of the skill to show it yourself, having instructions on paper or on a screen can also be very helpful for the people learning to look over while they work.
Keep in mind you may get a flood of requests, just be sure to only take on what you’re capable of doing!
For venues you can look into crafting spaces, churches, coffee shops or any space that would allow for meetups, some places may let you do the meetups for free and some may ask for money, just be not to break the bank!
It’s suggested to have at least one monthly in person meetup.
