What is a Crafters' Space?
Places like businesses and non-profits (or even a place in your yard if it can be protected from the elements) allow small dedicated spaces where crafting supplies can be put into (such as a basket or some shelves) or can be taken by people that need it. It works much like a little free library where people give what they don’t need and people take what they do.
When the space is overflowing those supplies can be taken out by us and if there’s not enough we can put some back in. The businesses and non-profits are not the ones donating items (unless they want to), they are simply providing a dedicated space, businesses in particular may benefit from this as this will act as an attractor for potential customers. Currently there are no spaces just yet but we are looking into small businesses and non-profits that are willing to work with us.
A list of acceptable items should be put up, this can be whatever you deem appropriate but the best options would be:
-
Anything related to sewing, knitting or crochet to make or repair clothes or make things for donating to other organizations.
-
Pencils, pens, crayons and other writing or drawing materials as well as drawing paper or posterboard, this can be used for making signs for protests or for kids that have little in the way of school supplies.
-
Glues and mod podge for a wide variety of crafts.
-
Sewing patterns or books that teach about a crafting skill.
Example Email for Businesses
Hello {name of person being contacted},

My name is {your name} and I’m with Scissortail Craftivists and I wanted to ask about creating a small community space at your business that acts as something like a little free library but for craft supplies like sewing needles and thread, yarn, pencils and paper and so on that people can come to and give or take from that space and in return those people going to your business are much more likely to buy from your store as we will promote these spots as our group works with other mutual aid organizations such as {name of organization here} to provide items like {example of item here} that people in our group are encouraged to make, many of those that follow us may not have the supplies they need so having a dedicated spot that they can go to will be very helpful. We will pick up anything that is overflowing and put in when there is not enough, you don’t have to add anything to the space or spend money on it in any way unless you want to, we’re only asking if it’s okay to use a small bit of space even if it’s small. We will check up with you weekly or you can email us for more questions.
Thank you for taking the time to read this email -{your name}.
